Soh Rui Yong Not Chosen For SEA Games Despite New National Record

SNOC says it’s because Soh Rui Yong didn’t make amends, but how to make amends if their president Tan Chuan Jin blocked all possible lines of communication with him?

Two-time SEA Games gold medalist Soh Rui Yong is excluded from the upcoming SEA Games line-up. This is despite him qualifying with a new national record of 2:22:59 (the qualifying mark is 2:33:08).

What is SNOC’s reason?

The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) said it rejected Soh’s nomination because his conduct and behaviour was “unbecoming” of a national athlete. They have rejected his nominations since 2019.

Since then, they say that Soh has made no attempt to make amends, correct or apologise for his conduct and behaviour.

“Instead, there have been continued and persistent actions by Soh to challenge, mock, threaten and/or disrespect organisations and individuals including the SNOC.”

SNOC

This all started with the dispute between Soh Rui Yong and Ashley Liew in 2015. Soh has since lost his defamation suit, and he was ordered to pay Liew S$180,000 in damages.

President of SNOC Tan Chuan Jin, blocked Soh on all social media platforms

According to Soh’s Facebook post, the president of SNOC, Tan Chuan Jin, blocked him on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

The president of SNOC should not stoop to such a level of blocking all possible communication with his athlete! How can Soh resolve disputes if he can’t even speak to the president of SNOC?

Even Soh himself said that he is willing to make amends and resolve matters, but now he has no way to do so!

“I will make it clear here, for SNOC and for everyone else. As far as I’m concerned, any disputes in the past is long water under the bridge for me. I’m happy to make amends and resolve matters, but it takes two hands to clap.”

Is the actions of our speaker of parliament warranted? Why is the SNOC harping on an issue that is already more than 3 years old?
